Tangbo

Surf guide

Tangbo, nestled in Barangay Tangbo within Sta. Monica on Siargao’s northern coast, is a lesser-known surf spot offering a peaceful escape from the island’s busier breaks in General Luna. Positioned on the Northwest side, this reef break is best during the winter season (December to March) when South to Southeast winds deliver offshore conditions. Tangbo is a mellow A-frame (left and right) that is ideal for beginners and intermediates on small to medium swells with forgiving take offs and long rides. On rare bigger days, Tangbo turns into a great intermediate to advanced spot but the current can rip through the peak making it extra challenging. Tangbo is a beautiful location that we'd recommend visiting whether the conditions are good for surf or not. There are also several spots nearby that offer more challenging waves when the swell picks up. Look to the right at Tangbo beach and you'll see a hollow right called Barbecue.

Ideal conditions

Swell direction

North-Northeast (N–NE)

Wind direction

Southwest (SW) offshore or West (W) light cross-offshore

Tide

Mid to High tide preferred but it's surfable on all tides. Cleaner with more water over reef. Barbecue can only be surfed around high tide.

Wave difficulty

Intermediate

Advanced beginner to intermediate. The current can be strong with a high tide and decent swell. Barbecue is suited to advanced surfers only.

Wave quality

Good

When the swell hits from the north-northeast and winds are offshore, Tangbo can produce clean, powerful waves with long workable faces. It’s less consistent than the main east-coast breaks but can deliver excellent sessions when the conditions align, especially during the September–January swell season.

Crowd factor

Moderate

Tangbo is located far from General Luna and requires a longer drive, which keeps crowds low. Most sessions have only a few surfers out, and it’s possible to score uncrowded waves even during peak surf season.

How to get there

Tangbo is located roughly 45 kilometers north of General Luna, making for a scenic 1.5‑hour drive along Siargao’s beautiful coastline. Begin your journey in General Luna by heading toward Dapa, where you’ll face two route options. You can either take the road north through Pacifico, continuing on toward Alegria, or you can bypass that route by traveling through Del Carmen on your way to Santa Monica. Once you arrive in Santa Monica, simply follow local signs or ask nearby residents to direct you to Barangay Tangbo’s surf spot. Although the roads are generally in good condition, it’s wise to drive slowly to ensure a safe, accident‑free journey.
