Rock Island

Surf guide

Rock Island is located next to Stimpy's – just a 10 minute boat ride from Catangnan. The wave is a long, powerful right-hander that is ideal for intermediate to advanced surfers when swell ranges from head high to double overhead. The break is divided into three distinct sections made up of open faces perfect for carving and the occasional barrel on wide sets. Rock Island shines in bigger swells, but it’s not for beginners or even intermediate surfers when it maxes out. On a good day, this spot promises an unforgettable surf session in a stunning location. With that said, surfing at Rock isn't always a walk in the park. A solid session here usually often involves steep drops, getting caught inside, and currents that will test your paddle fitness. It usually pays to have a little bit more foam when there's a lot of water moving. Be cautious not to sit too deep on the rock or drop in on closeouts. Rock Island can be surfed on any tide, but it works best at low tide to give the wave some shape.

Ideal conditions

Swell direction

4-12 ft Northeast swells.

Wind direction

South to Southwest offshore winds.

Tide

Mid to low tide. Rock Island prefers less water but you can still get a wave on high tide, particularly on bigger swells.

Wave difficulty

Intermediate

Rock Island sits in the upper intermediate range, and is best suited to advanced surfers above 6ft.

Wave quality

Good

Rippable walls with some fast, hollow sections. Holds XL swells better than almost any wave in Siargao.

Crowd factor

Moderate

Rock Island is a bit unpredictable. It can be one of the most crowded waves on the island one day and nearly empty the next. To avoid the crowds, try heading out early in the morning or surfing at high tide.

How to get there

Rock Island is accessible exclusively by boat. Several areas have boatmen willing to take surfers for the right price, but the most common departure point is next to Kanaway Surf School in Catangnan. The journey takes approximately 10 minutes and costs 250 pesos per person, typically requiring a minimum of two passengers. The boatman will wait or surf with you then take you back. Since Rock Island is next to Stimpy's, you can check both spots before deciding where to surf. Keep in mind that the fare covers a 2 hour session, after which the boatman usually prefers to return to collect other surfers.
