Cloud 9

Surf guide

Cloud 9 is the wave that put Siargao on the map – a heavy, barreling right hander (and occasional left) breaking over sharp reef, offering some of the best and most critical tubes on the planet. When it's on Cloud 9 delivers perfection. A steep drop straight into a hollow top to bottom barrel with a smooth exit. Short but intense, this wave is not for the faint hearted. It’s a dream for skilled surfers and a nightmare for those unprepared for its power. When Cloud 9 is working (best from September to November) it’s a flawless, barreling machine. Anything from 2-4 feet can be fun but still fast and hollow. At 4-6 feet the takeoff steepens and the barrels get heavier. At 6-10+ feet Cloud 9 transforms into a slabby unforgiving beast with deep barrels, thick lips, and a critical takeoff over razor sharp reef. When it’s firing there’s no better wave. Come see it (or surf it) for yourself, and you’ll understand why it’s one of the most iconic waves in the world. Epic surf photography by local residents @mati.olivieri.surfph & @olibayer

Ideal conditions

Swell direction

4-10+ ft Northeast swells. Cloud 9 stays consistent even with small swells in the offseason.

Wind direction

Southwest offshore winds create clean barrels. Onshore winds may roughen it, but it’s still rideable.

Tide

High tide is ideal at Cloud 9. The wave can be surfed on a low tide but becomes extremely shallow and dangerous.

Wave difficulty

Advanced

Advanced/pro in peak season. During the low season (April – August) when the swell is between 1-3 ft, Cloud 9 can be suitable for intermediate surfers and beginners with an instructor.

Wave quality

Perfect

Cloud 9 delivers world class barrels, often considered some of the best in the world.

Crowd factor

Crowded

Often referred to as “Crowd 9”, this is the go-to wave for most local and foreign residents. Paddle out at first light for the best chance at scoring the wave to yourself.

How to get there

Once you’re in General Luna, Cloud 9 is a stone’s throw away. Head to the Cloud 9 Tower, right next to Shaka Cafe in Catangnan. From there, it's only about a 150 meter walk/paddle to the break. Don’t forget to keep 50 PHP handy for the environmental fee at the roadside entry (if they’re collecting). Local residents can enter for free when they present a valid resident ID.
